Tanner & Lynda’s Perfect Charleston Proposal at Hampton Park
When Jena from Propose Charleston reached out about Tanner’s Hampton Park Charleston Proposal plans, I knew this was going to be such a special one! Together, Jena and Tanner scouted, coordinated, and styled the coziest spot in Hampton Park for this incredible surprise Charleston proposal! The florals were a warm, sunny yellow and crisp white – so vibrant against the lush greens and softly glowing Spanish moss that this park is known for. And if you know me, you know I’m all about the littlest details: for the Champagne Toast experience, Jena had the luxe coupes from Estelle Colored Glass (She’s local, y’all!!!) ready for the chilled bubbly! Estelle’s fabulous coupes are like the icing on the cake here!
Although Hampton Park is often buzzing on a Saturday evening around sunset, the Propose Charleston team scouted a tucked-away nook, off the beaten path and wonderfully intimate. Alongside the beautiful floral arrangements, Jena had 40+ candles scattered throughout, which just glowed as the sun dipped and made the moment feel magical. When Lynda turned the corner to us, surprise and joy lit up her face – it was just so perfect … and beautiful!
Tanner’s Proposal at Hampton Park is such a great reminder that the best proposal moments happen where the space, the light, and the story all align. Scroll down to see images from their perfect proposal day!

Why Hampton Park Works for a Charleston Proposal
- The draping live oak trees and Spanish moss create a distinct Lowcountry look – rich texture, soft layers of light, and romantic depth. Photographers note that these trees filter light beautifully and provide dreamy backdrops.
- The park offers different areas for proposing: From shaded pathways, moss-draped oaks, and open areas with blooming flowers year-round.
- Because it’s a public, free parking, it’s accessible while still giving you the freedom to personalize the scene (candles, florals, picnic elements) without an additional venue cost.

Tips for Planning a Hampton Park Proposal in Charleston
After photographing countless “she said yes!” moments at Hampton Park, I’ve learned a few things that can make all the difference, especially if you want your proposal to feel intentional, effortless, and completely private in a very public place.
- Chase the golden light. Early morning or sunset gives you that soft, glowing Charleston magic that makes every image sing. There’s just nothing quite like it filtering through the Spanish moss.
- Be flexible with your spot. Hampton Park is public and well-loved, so if you’ve got your heart set on the gazebo or the tree-lined avenue, know that you might have to wait a few minutes or pivot to a quieter nook. (Honestly, those tucked-away corners often end up being my favorites.)
- Check the Citadel football schedule. Trust me on this one — the cannons that go off during home games? Let’s just say they don’t exactly pair well with a really special, romantic moment.
- Spring and fall are stunning, but popular. If you want more privacy (and less chance of a dozen photographers in sight), aim for an early weekday or choose a less open spot.
- Parking tip: Use the main lot near the lake. It’s the easiest access point and saves you the stress of circling when you’re already nervous.
- Respect the space. Hampton Park is a Charleston gem — let’s leave it even better than you found it. Always gather candles, florals, or décor afterward. (And this alone is a great reason to hire a Charleston Proposal Photographer and/or Proposal Planner!)
- Add a personal touch. A small picnic setup, a champagne toast, or a meaningful playlist can turn “just a proposal” into a memory that feels layered and personal.
- Stay nearby. The Wagener Terrace neighborhood has great Airbnbs and cozy spots that make the day feel like a getaway without the downtown chaos. You’ll feel like a local and so much a tourist.
- End the night with dinner nearby. I always recommend Park & Grove or a quick Uber downtown to celebrate – the transition from “Yes!” to “Let’s toast!” is the best kind of momentum. (I’m always happy to offer recommendations, too!)
BONUS TIP: Plan your ‘why we’re here’ story. (This is your little secret weapon.) Whether it’s a casual walk through the park or a “quick couples session,” having a believable reason to be there keeps the surprise completely intact. I truly believe this is one of the most important tips to pulling off the surprise element!
